We are restarting Wayves! Who are we? Right now it’s myself and queer professional journalist Jordan Parker. But soon there will be a much larger “we."
The new version of Wayves will have something it’s never had before: paid writers. At the beginning, we won’t be paying a lot per article, but as soon as we get going I expect to pay industry rates.
Our financial model at the moment is advertising; that might change., but it’s what we’ve got right now. So to pay our writers, we need advertising. For now, I’ll be doing the ad sales; when things stabilize I would like to have someone else make a decent income at it.
Restarting the magazine is a chicken-and-egg situation: we need good journalism, good essential stories; to get that I need to pay the writers; to get that we need advertisers who in turn want to see that great content and know that lots of people are reading. The big advantage we have is that Wayves is a respected name in queer journalism in Atlantic Canada; I know this because I hear it unprovoked from people every day.
I have some ideas for a paper edition, but we need to be a going concern — that is, a steady supply of essential, quality stories, before we can get to that.
So here’s what we need:
Writers
If you know someone who wants to do queer journalism in Atlantic Canada, please send them my way. If you want to write, write to 2020@wayves.ca. You don’t have to be a professional. You do have to be a good writer, and able to do difficult or fun news stories including interviews. If you need coaching, we can do coaching. A lot of the coaching and discussion of stories will probably be done via some chat forum rather than face-to-face meetings — but we will have those as well.
Editorial Team / Board
Wayves always has been a nonprofit society. They always have a board or team. In the past, we’ve met face to face twice a month and done a lot of work by email, but I anticipate that we’ll be using some kind of on line chat - Facebook chat, texting, WhatsApp, Discord, Slack, etc.
The board will spend most of its time discovering and discussing potential stories and whether, or how, we should cover them.
If you want to be part of the editorial team, write to 2020@wayves.ca.
Advertisers
Our finance model at the moment is advertising; that might change, but it’s what we’ve got right now. So to pay our writers, we need advertising. For now, I’ll be doing the ad sales; when things stabilize I would like to have someone else make a decent income at it.
I have a list, but we need a big list, so please send me your ideas of who might be good advertisers in the magazine. Send advertising ideas to ads@wayves.ca.
We're looking forward to once again having thriving, essential 2SLGBT+ journalism in Atlantic Canada.
