Here's the second of two articles on self-declared Q-friendly campgrounds in Atlantic Canada. Wayves Magazine publishes this (at the moment quite short) list of campgrounds here, and we also publish the list of upcoming Pride Celebrations here.
Hi everyone, can’t believe it’s been seven or eight years since we purchased the 119 acres that make up the property here which became Mengo Campground. We weathered a few storms, one nasty hurricane and a few years of COVID. Through it all the community and those who became members have kept us going. A big thank you to them.
For folks visiting here, our theme is ‘Living the Dream.” We are one of the few places which is more than just a campground. The idea of making it a private club for us was being able to create a place where one just doesn’t wander in. You become a member of our collective family of choice: a place to build friendships, relax and have fun. A place to allow gay folks to have a safe, friendly space: somewhere you can forget about the city, forget about work, just come and be yourself. Gay couples can hug and kiss. We try to put the “M” back in magical LOL.
Over time we have identified a few things to upgrade. First, we need more sites! So, we have a plan to add 18-20 more three-way sites this year. Another feature is expanding the deck around the pool. Plus add a few more washrooms. All of these separate jobs will enable more folks to enjoy what we offer. Last year we added two bunkies for those who want something sturdier than a tent. A "bunkie" is a small wooden shed structure, metal roof with two cots more comfortable than a tent and perfect to get out of the heat or the odd rain shower.
Our barn – I mean “Club House” as I’m constantly reminded to call it – has had a big change inside with the added bar counter and room. It looks really good and still has a few more changes expected this year. The Club House is where one can enjoy karaoke, dancing and an upstairs TV and theatre space.
The naturalist area (yes that means nude sunbathing) has also been expanded with the help of the members, and tweaked with some "toys" for those who want a little bit of fun. I won’t spoil the surprise but I’ll hint it’s a must see for those who like playing outside. Last year we continued with monthly events and, just to mention a few: The Queens Gala (drag show), Red and White party for Canada Day, Pride week events which is when the Fabulous “underwear Glow Party” happens. Check out our web site and face book page for events this year.
Most can’t wait to start a new season to enjoy what has been called the “best getaway ever!”
Of course, folks each year enjoy the 27' pool, horse shoe pits, washer toss games, dog run, and various rental outdoor games.
One thing unique to Mengo is that our members are involved with everything. Members help with mowing or get involved with planning our special monthly events and assist with the BBQs.
Our camping store/office space has an interesting inventory. So, check out jocks and glow underwear available for sale and yes, onesies to snuggle in for those movie nights. We have some of the best “cheeky” logo T-shirts. We’ve listened and heard what folks want and have added items as requested.
To refresh, yes, we have seasonal sites and expect this year to add a few more, plus over 44 non-serviced sites available. So, step by step, we've built on the initial vision for the campground, with more each season.
As a private campground we get asked "Can anyone join? Who is welcome here?” We are a gay camping club, but honestly, over the last few years, it’s primarily been gay men. However, those members have also bought straight friends and family to some of the events, like Family Pride BBQ. The best answer to that question is - We’re gay, but we all have connections, be it family or friends – those with whom we love to share time. This is a place where if people respect, love, accept you and embrace your gay life, then cool, they can come too.
This idea was a goal we strived for in the beginning and it seems to have worked. Over the last year or two we’ve had clients honeymoon here, have held numerous birthdays and even held a wedding in our “Club House.” We expect more people to take advantage of our safe space for future events.
An added plus nearby, one can explore Rushton's Beach Provincial Park which has warm waters and sandy beaches. We are also very close to the Canada Trail. One can bike or hike to one’s content.
Come check us out and join our family! We plan to be around for many years to come.
Special events/BBQs are posted on the Events tab of our website, below.
We wouldn’t turn down a few helping hands: it’s just the two of us. If folks want more information or would like to help, please email us or drop a message via our FB page, link below. Please message before showing up.
