The OUTeast Film Festival Association can't wait to announce the Opening Night Gala of the 2016 OUTeast Queer Film Festival. In advance of the full program announcement on May 19th, OUTeast is proud to announce MAJOR! as our opening night film.
MAJOR! is a documentary film exploring the life and campaigns of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a formerly incarcerated Black transgender elder and activist who has been fighting for the rights of trans women of colour for over 40 years. Miss Major is a veteran of the Stonewall Rebellion and a survivor of Attica State Prison, a former sex worker, an elder, and a community leader and human rights activist. She is simply “Mama” to many in her community. If history is held within us, embodied in our loves and losses, then Miss Major is a living library, a resource for generations to come to more fully understand the rich heritage of the Queer Rights movement that is so often whitewashed and rendered invisible.
The 2016 OUTeast Film Festival presented by RBC is proud to bring MAJOR! to Halifax. “I can’t wait to watch this film with our audience,” said Jenna Dufton, OUTeast Festival Director of Programming. “Trans women of colour are typically so under/misrepresented. We are extremely lucky to have Miss Major as an elder and driving force for the greater queer community. I’m proud OUTeast can shine a spotlight on a true hero of queer history and play a part in sharing her story more widely.”
MAJOR! will screen at Neptune Theatre Fountain Hall, 7:30 PM on Thursday, June 16th. The 5th annual OUTeast Queer Film Festival runs from June 16-19, 2016.
Tickets go on on sale on May 10th at 12:00 PM AST. Tickets are $15 and available through outeastfilm.com or ticketpro.ca. Tickets for all screenings will go on sale immediately after the program is announced on May 19th. Screening tickets start at $12 each, with the All-OUT, All Access Festival Pass starting at $60 (Early Bird pricing).
