LGBTQ2SI Canadians experience a variety of challenges to accessing safe, affordable and culturally appropriate housing and housing supports. While discussions around “healthy aging in place” exist, many provinces, including Nova Scotia, have yet to create adequate housing models, policies, and housing options for our diverse populations.
A group of Halifax folk are creating an officially registered society to address affordability and inclusiveness of LGBTQ2SI senior housing options for urban and rural Nova Scotia.
The objective is to develop sustainable solutions to housing challenges via several goals:
- to become a community resource for housing options by assembling / developing ideas and making information available to those wishing to “self-help”
- to establish and champion a standard of training / practice for those long term care facilities wishing to be denoted as being "GenPRIDE certified."
- to advance a shift in housing options by sourcing and partnering with parties interested in developing new GenPRIDE facilities or testing modifications to existing facilities, in whole or in part.
The group is next meeting on Thursday, July 11th from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Shirley Burnstein Hall, Northwood, North Street at Northwood Street entrance.
The group will review of last month's meeting; proposed name; terms of reference; goals and objectives.
Please R.S.V.P. your attendance no later than July 9th to: linda.furlought@gmail.com
