Dear Community Members,

The Fredericton Pride board would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Monarch Staff, Friends, and other community members who took the initiative to make pride a reality. Without their assistance, this year's pride would not have taken place. They spent many restless evenings trying to organize and pick up the pieces. This included organizing and facilitating a gender-affirming hair, nail, and makeup event. This was completed in less than 48 hours and was a great success. They have also been able to keep the Pride Market running at NBEX. Before transferring responsibilities to the interim board, they also devoted many hours to ensuring that the parade would still take place. So, please show your support and gratitude to the Monarch group. Also, make sure to visit many of the wonderful events happening at their location this Pride!

To be clear, the Board is the appropriate body to contact with any concerns you may have about the parade moving forward, including the Grand Marshalls' selection. We welcome feedback from all members of the community and are open to hearing different points of view. Though we may not reach the same conclusions, we both recognize the importance of listening to and learning from others. All we ask is for everyone to return that sentiment. We are reading your comments and taking them in for consideration. That being said we will not tolerate any hate-speech. Let's continue having polite and honest conversations going forward, remember we are all human ❤

Statement on Fredericton Pride Week and Parade

Fierté Fredericton Pride is thrilled to announce that, despite recent challenges, Fredericton Pride Week will proceed as scheduled. On Monday, July 15th, our Interim Board of Directors was onboarded, and since then, we have worked tirelessly to ensure the continuation of all planned events. Through the unwavering support of our partners, volunteers, and community members, we can proudly confirm that Fredericton Pride Week is not canceled. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this swift and smooth transition, including former Board members.

The City of Fredericton has confirmed that our parade application is in good standing and all required safety measures are in place. We have collaborated closely with the City and the Fredericton Police Force to meet all municipal requirements and ensure the safety of all participants. We are in constant communication with parade applicants, partners, and volunteers to confirm their attendance and participation in scheduled events.
We are honored to have Fredericton Palestine Solidarity as our Grand Marshall this year, standing in solidarity with communities facing severe various intersecting layers of oppression.

The Fredericton Pride Parade will take place as scheduled on Sunday, July 21st at 3:00 pm. The Marshalling Grounds are at the York Street parking lot behind City Hall. This free, outdoor, accessible event is open to all ages and will be livestreamed. Rain or shine, the parade will go on! We extend our deepest appreciation to our funding bodies, including the Government of Canada, Fredericton Tourism, and Delta Hotels Fredericton, for their generous support.

We call on our community to volunteer for parade route positions, setup, and cleanup. These events thrive on your engagement and dedication. Celebrating Pride is a collective effort, and we can only succeed by working together. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference. The Interim Board is steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the festival and parade proceed with the help of our incredible community.

Just 45 minutes prior to the official start of Fierté Fredericton Pride, it was announced via social media that the Festival had been canceled "due to the harassment board members have received". While the current Board of Directors has ensured invoice payments and administrative tasks will be taken care of and in good order for the future board, they also note that there are multiple board resignations happening as well, and have requested media privacy.

While Pride has been canceled, the New Brunswick Coalition for Transgender Rights have announced they will be taking steps to ensure some form of Pride Festival and March happens this year, and have sent a call out to "any who were previously planning on filling a given operational role, or would like to jump in to fill a role that has just been vacated ... through the NBCTR FB group, through Messenger, by email (nbctr2023@gmail.com), or by phone (506-230-6424)."

Due to the harassment board members have received, including individuals posing as board members on social media and implicating our workplaces, our wellbeing and livelihoods have been negatively impacted. In order to ensure our own safety, that of our performers, and our volunteers, Fierté Fredericton Pride has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2024 festival. This decision has not been made lightly and all other alternatives were considered.

To clear up confusion regarding the decision to cancel last night’s fundraiser, the cancellation was not due to any concerns we had in regard to safety involving Monarch or its staff. The safety concerns we had were specifically from harassment on social media and via email towards board members and performers that posed serious risk to the wellbeing of the individuals affected. Please do not direct any harassment towards Monarch or its staff as our decision to cancel last night’s fundraiser, and the festival as a whole, is in no way related to them.

We will ensure payment of any outstanding invoices are made and that administratively everything is in good order for the future board. We will be in touch with performers, artists, partners, and sponsors over the next few days.

We ask for the media to please respect our privacy during this time. We also ask that no further harassment be directed towards resigning board members. Fierté Fredericton Pride has always been made up of volunteers. We did our absolute best we could with the resources we had available to us and under the guidance provided to our team.

We recognize this announcement is alarming and incredibly difficult for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, as well as survivors of various forms of harassment, discrimination, and abuse.
