Same Gender Parents Birth Certificate Legislation

Rafah Di Costanzo

On Thursday, April 6 between 12 and 2pm, MLA Rafah DiConstanzo (she/her) (Clayton Park West) is introducing a private member's bill in the legislature.

Nova Scotia's laws don't allow same-gender parents to be on a child's birth certificate. Queer parents must adopt their own children, a process that takes up to a year and costs thousands of dollars.

The proposed bill will (finally) change that.

There will be a press conference, and having the public viewing area at the legislature packed will be essential to show that Nova Scotians of all stripes care about this issue.

DiCostanzo was first elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly as MLA for Clayton Park West in 2017 and was re-elected in 2021. She has served as Liberal Caucus Chair and Liberal Caucus Whip and is now a member of the Health Committee. Prior to becoming an MNLA, she was an Arabic interpreter and a small business owner. Her NS Legislature page is here.
