These are comments left by Wayves readers about the possible closure of Night Spa.
Here are the comments:
- I’d say “a lot sad” because I think it’s an important option though I’ve never attended.
- I'm sad for those who use it but I have never been, it's not for me, and it will not impact my life. Still, I want safe spaces for everyone even if they aren't useful to me so it will be sad if that space isn't there. However, there needs to be enough of a community to support the business aspect of it as a business or they need to find another funding model. I can't say I would subsidize a building for a lifestyle that I'm not in but I wouldn't prevent others from accessing it however they best want or need to. This community can find spaces to gather with other options perhaps, or they can lease their space to other groups for other purposes.
- Conflicted. Never heard of it prior to a few months ago, but saddened that another queer space is possibly closing
- It serves the gay community and should not be closed.
- Don’t go often but I’ll be sad to see it go
- Never knew there was one.
- I hadn't heard of it but the story of it closing absolutely sucks.
- This building literally destroyed the Apollo, so good riddance
- Problematic owner, good riddance.
- i am sad that people who enjoyed the space have nowhere like it to go but i personally did not like the ownership and saw photos of the unhygienic conditions and decided it wasn’t the place for me. i think it is a loss in the sense that we don’t have any bathhouses/sex-positive queer spaces in Halifax compared to other cities. Rumors and Stardust don’t fill this need at all.
- This is nOT a safe space. Chris is a rapist, and it is offensive that Wayves is supporting this entity that exists to prey upon the sexually open minded and uses our community to expoliot the vulnerable
- While geography and other factors make it inaccessible for me, I'm sorry to see us lose ANY community space as they're needed now perhaps more than they have been in many years!
- This is the only place people can go to for this type of venue and it literally just expanded in the past few years to be more inclusive of the broader 2SLGBTQIA+ community (aka., it's not just for gay cis men anymore). It is a staple of the queer community and should be treated as such.
- We only have so many spaces that we feel safe in and the community trusts this space. It would be bordering on homophobic to see it shut down.
- I never attended the spa myself, but I knew some who did. They really went out of their way to create safe, inclusive environments and it will be a shame to see them close their doors.
- Don’t know about it, but I’m in favor of anything additional to the bay Halifax experience is worth supporting
- I didn't really understand the concept to be honest. I've gone to bath houses before and this didn't really seem like it was a bathhouse and no one I know had gone before so I just never ended up going.
- One of the few queer spaces we have in Halifax - I haven't frequented since it was sea dogs, but I have been happy to know it is there serving my community
- I remember some bath house 20 years ago that was for men? Not sure if this is the same thing?
- Never heard of it but the closure of any gay space is devastating. There are so few places we can call our own.
- I love this place so much. For me, I feel such a sense of community when I am there. It is an essential space for queer folks and it's loss will be felt deeply by those who find safety there.
- Please do everything you can to stay in the neighbourhood.
